30th birthday · from a partner · nothing to buy

My partner cleared out the shed. That was it. That was the present.

I had been going to do it for two years and it had become a low, permanent hum of guilt every time I walked past the window. She took a Saturday while I was away, took eleven bags to the tip, and put everything worth keeping on shelves she had put up herself.

There was nothing to unwrap. I have had more expensive birthdays and I could not tell you what I got on any of them.
