Why some birthdays get treated differently
The milestone years — 18th, 21st, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th, 65th, 70th, 80th — carry weight the years between them don’t, and people give differently for them. An 18th and a 21st mark thresholds; a 30th and 40th tend to prompt stock-taking; 60th onwards often shifts from objects toward time, travel and things that get used.
